The Provincial Government of Davao del Norte, through Gov. Edwin I. Jubahib, expressed full support for the province’s pilot implementation of Project LAWA at BINHI in 2024. This endorsement, occurring amidst discussions on the project’s objectives in identified municipalities within Davao del Norte, marks a significant step towards combatting the effects of the El Niño phenomenon in the region.

Governor Jubahib proposed a strategic shift: prioritizing the cultivation of catfish (Hito) over tilapia for aquaculture within Project LAWA at BINHI. Citing both the community’s preference for catfish consumption and the potential benefits of catfish farming in Davao del Norte, the Governor’s suggestion underscores a commitment to tailoring project activities to local needs and preferences.

Gayonan’s comprehensive presentation underscored the critical role of Project LAWA at BINHI in bolstering the resilience of vulnerable households, particularly in areas susceptible to drought and water scarcity. The project, designed to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events such as El Niño, aims to alleviate food shortages while promoting environmentally sustainable livelihoods and conservation practices.

Acknowledging the Governor’s proposal, the project team has committed to further evaluation and coordination with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), a partner in providing necessary resources for aquaculture endeavors.

This collaborative spirit underscores a collective dedication towards sustainable development amidst water scarcity and food inefficiency at the height of El Niño in Davao del Norte. By harnessing local expertise and governmental support, Project LAWA at BINHI aspires to drive enduring positive change in the livelihoods and resilience of communities facing water access challenges across the region.
