SHELTERED WORKSHOP FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AND OLDER PERSONS

The Sheltered Workshop for Persons with Disability and Older Persons is a community-based facility designed to provide training and productive employment for PWDs and OPs to enhance their capacity to attain a more meaningful,
productive and satisfying way of life and ultimately become self-reliant, productive, and contributing members of society.
This program is currently piloted in the NCR area, specifically in the Municipality of Asingan, Pangasinan.

OBJECTIVES
The program aims to:
- Provide capability-building activities for PWDs and OPs.
- Provide employment for PWDs and OPs who can function in a controlled environment.
- Advocate for community support for PWDs and OPs, especially persons with developmental disability.
- Provide opportunities to parents, siblings, and community members to actively participate in the rehabilitation of persons with disability and older persons, whichever is applicable.
- Strengthen the expertise of staff/ workers in operationalizing sheltered workshops specifically designed to meet the needs of persons with disability and older persons.
- Provide Older persons the opportunity to continue working and contributing to society while enjoying a reasonable quality of life.
- Increase community awareness on issues that affect both the PWDs and OPs
- Lessen, if not to curb, the prevalence of mendicancy
COMPONENTS
- Capability Building
Strengthening/ harnessing knowledge, attitudes, and skills of the community leaders and the project staff involved to enable them to understand how to care for and handle persons with disabilities - Vocational Training
This involves training project workers by MDO or MDA or equivalent staff in a particular trade, arts and crafts. This training also enables them to acquire skills, enhance self-esteem and chance of employment, and ultimately become productive - Social Skills Training
Training of PWDs and OPs along with social skills to prepare them for integration into the community. These include personal hygiene, self-care, health and security, communications, travels and working with others, understanding of work preparations, and management of savings - Education of parents, sibling,s and interested community members
Provide opportunities to parents, sibling,s and community leaders to be oriented/ trained on the subject of PWDs and OPs and their care and management, especially for person with developmental disability
