In a small barangay of Mabini, 100 residents gathered for a transformative Cash-for-Training (CFT) session under Project LAWA at BINHI of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office XI in partnership with the LGU.

Held on April 11, 2025, in Barangay San Antonio, the training went beyond classroom discussions by providing practical demonstrations and expert guidance. Participants learned about climate-adaptive farming, disaster preparedness, and sustainable practices to help improve food security and protect their livelihoods.

“This training is more than just lectures. We’re helping people learn how to adapt, protect their livelihoods, and support their communities,” said Royel Alag, Project Development Officer II of DSWD XI. “Project LAWA at BINHI aims to build resilience in every family we assist,” he added.

The session brought together a diverse group of experts from various agencies. DSWD personnel Royel Alag and Luigi C. Garzon provided technical support, along with Ana Kharina A. Cañete from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. Aquaculture and agriculture specialists Peter Jess L. Berdon, Jhonil Laranjo Taray, and Crystal Jane Dagonan also contributed their expertise. Additional guidance on vegetable production came from the Municipal Agriculture and Social Welfare offices. Marc Louie S. Marin and Melane T. Gomez of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) shared insights on protecting crops and securing farm investments.

The training featured modules on climate-smart farming, risk mapping, and sustainable livelihood strategies tailored to local conditions. Beneficiaries were encouraged to apply these techniques in their daily lives, ensuring that the learners would not just stay in the classroom, but flourish in their farms, homes, and communities.

Participants expressed gratitude for the program, viewing it as an opportunity to rise above challenges that have long threatened their livelihoods—from frequent typhoons to poor harvests. “Before, we only hoped the weather would be kind. Now, we have knowledge and tools to help us prepare,” one beneficiary shared.

With continued collaboration between DSWD and partner agencies, Project LAWA at BINHI is not only addressing immediate needs but also cultivating long-term resilience—one community at a time.
