Passion isn’t always discovered overnight—it often unfolds through experiences that shape and define us.

For Renalyn S. Dabalos, a dedicated Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) worker, the journey to finding her true calling was anything but straightforward. Having served under the program for eight years, she has witnessed firsthand the struggles and triumphs of 4Ps beneficiaries. Her work is more than just a job—it is a mission fueled by compassion and the desire to create lasting change.

Her first glimpse into the world of social work came during her internship at Padre Pio Homes for Children, an NGO dedicated to supporting youth facing family issues and educational struggles. That experience opened her eyes to the power of empathy and human connection. She saw firsthand how listening without judgment and offering genuine support could make a profound difference in people’s lives. Though she initially had doubts about whether social work was the right path for her, every encounter reaffirmed her calling.

But her journey has not been without its challenges. One of the most difficult moments in her early career came during her first Social Welfare and Development Indicator (SWDI) interview. She met a woman who had suffered physical and verbal abuse at the hands of her husband. Terrified, the woman hesitated to answer questions, and Renalyn, still new to the field, felt overwhelmed. Unsure of how to proceed, she turned to her supervisor at the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) for guidance. That experience taught her the value of seeking support, exercising patience, and approaching delicate situations with deep empathy.

There were also moments when her role as a social worker was questioned. Once, a teacher challenged her understanding of the struggles faced by Indigenous Peoples (IP) communities, assuming that as an outsider, she could never truly relate. Rather than being discouraged, Renalyn saw this as an opportunity to listen, learn, and foster understanding. She remained committed to her duty, striving to bridge gaps, empower families, and advocate for the needs of vulnerable communities. The experience strengthened her resolve and deepened her connection to the people she serves.

When asked what keeps her going despite the challenges, Renalyn’s answer is simple: her family. She draws strength from her two children and dreams of building a better life for them. But beyond her personal motivations, she wouldn’t have lasted this long if she didn’t love what she does. Passion fuels her work, making even the toughest days worthwhile. For her, the real reward lies in making a lasting difference in the lives of the people she serves.

One of the most fulfilling moments in her career came when the Provincial Operations Office (POO) recognized her hard work as a Case Manager. While the acknowledgment was gratifying, what truly brings her joy is witnessing the transformation of the beneficiaries she serves. Many initially feared losing their 4Ps assistance, but over time, they gained confidence, realizing that they could stand on their own. Seeing parents take pride in sending their children to school and hearing their words of gratitude remind Renalyn why her work matters.

At the heart of her service is compassion—the guiding value that shapes everything she does. Without it, the work would feel empty. True compassion allows her to connect deeply with beneficiaries, understand their struggles, and provide meaningful support. It drives her to go beyond expectations, to serve with sincerity, and to create lasting change in the communities she works with.

Social workers like Renalyn are making a huge difference in the lives of 4Ps beneficiaries. Their dedication and hard work go beyond providing assistance—they empower families to rise above their circumstances and build a brighter future.

Renalyn’s story is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and the fulfillment that comes from serving others. What once seemed like an uncertain path has now become her life’s greatest purpose—helping those in need with unwavering dedication and a heart full of compassion.
