Residents of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur are one step closer to a more climate-resilient and sustainable future as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office XI, together with the Municipal Technical Working Group (MTWG), conducted a series of site validation and assessment activities for Project LAWA at BINHI under the Risk Resilience Program – Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (RRP-CCAM).
Held on March 19–20, 2025, the assessment focused on three sitios: Tapikong in Barangay Bacungan, Turan in Barangay Balnate, and Kabuhuan in Barangay Upper Bala. These communities were actively involved in the validation process, as local insights and firsthand knowledge proved vital in identifying the most suitable areas for the project.
The initiative aims to empower communities by strengthening their capacity to respond to climate change while opening up opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. By carefully selecting appropriate project sites, the program ensures that interventions truly address the environmental challenges residents face and are tailored to their unique needs and conditions.
“Site validation is a crucial phase because it gives us a clear picture of the realities on the ground and allows direct engagement with the communities. We aim to ensure that our interventions are both appropriate and sustainable, and the active participation of Magsaysay residents shows their strong commitment to climate resilience,” said Jo Ann V. Labio, DSWD XI Project Development Officer II.

Local leaders and community members joined DSWD personnel and MTWG representatives during the site visits, reflecting a strong spirit of collaboration. The MTWG includes members from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and Municipal Agriculture Office—all working together to support communities in building long-term resilience.
The validation activities represent more than just technical evaluation—they serve as a foundation for inclusive development and environmental stewardship at the grassroots level. As the project moves forward, the residents of Magsaysay stand at the heart of the effort, united in their commitment to protecting their environment and securing a more sustainable future for generations to come.
