To empower local hog raisers and promote sustainable livelihood practices, the Department of Social Welfare and Development – Sustainable Livelihood Program (DSWD-SLP), in partnership with San Miguel Corporation, led a capability-building training on livestock management and biosecurity on January 24, 2025, at the Covered Court in Coronobe, Maragusan, Davao de Oro.

This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Municipal Agriculture and Services Office (MAGSO) and EZ Distribution System Inc., aimed to equip participants with technical knowledge and hands-on skills in hog raising, disease prevention, and financial management.

Enhancing Livelihoods Through Capacity Building

A total of 72 individuals participated in the training, including 56 SLP program participants from various SLP Associations and individual livelihood projects, alongside 16 attendees, including guest speakers and technical experts.

The training provided comprehensive lessons on breed selection, farm management, biosecurity measures, and business strategies to ensure that hog raisers maximize productivity and profitability. Participants were also guided on preventing major swine diseases, including African Swine Fever (ASF) and Hog Cholera, through proper sanitation, vaccination protocols, and early disease detection.

Strengthening Partnerships for Livelihood Sustainability

The success of this initiative highlights the importance of multi-sectoral partnerships in promoting sustainable livelihood programs. As the lead agency, DSWD-SLP played a crucial role in organizing the activity and ensuring that beneficiaries received relevant and practical training to enhance their livelihood ventures.

  • DSWD-SLP spearheaded the coordination, providing access to livelihood resources and technical training.
  • San Miguel Corporation provided resource persons and subject matter experts who shared technical knowledge on hog production, disease prevention, and farm management best practices.
  • MAGSO contributed expertise in hog production and biosecurity protocols to help farmers improve farm management and disease prevention.
  • EZ Distribution System Inc. shared market insights and industry best practices to enhance business sustainability.

This initiative reinforces DSWD-SLP’s commitment to empowering communities through skills development, economic resilience, and sustainable agribusiness ventures.

Moving Forward

This capability-building initiative aligns with DSWD-SLP’s commitment to empowering communities through skills development, economic resilience, and livelihood sustainability. Moving forward, DSWD-SLP will continue working with partners to provide post-training support, including technical assistance, business monitoring, and additional capacity-building sessions, to reinforce the long-term impact of the training.

By fostering strong partnerships and equipping local entrepreneurs with essential skills, DSWD-SLP continues to drive inclusive growth and self-sufficiency among communities in Davao de Oro and beyond.
