In a landmark event aimed at transforming the future of local communities, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD XI) commenced the Cash-for-Work for Project LAWA at BINHI (Local Adaptation to Water Access and Breaking Insufficiency Through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished) in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental on July 16-19, 2024.

This event marks the commencement of a sustainable community livelihood initiative, emphasizing the importance of water access and agricultural resilience, especially for the Indigenous people community. Among the participating associations are Linaboan LABIN Farm Association, Nueva Villa Lawa at Binhi Farmers Association, Banahaw Paradise Peak Association, Sitio Elib Lawa at Binhi Farmers Association, Sitio KALAMI-I Lawa at Binhi Association, and North Lamidan Farmers and Fisherfolks Association.

The groundbreaking ceremony launched the start of the community’s first 20-day Cash-for-Work (CFT & CFW) program, designed to empower residents through immediate employment opportunities while enhancing local projects. This initiative was set to significantly improve water access and agricultural productivity, laying a strong foundation for long-term food security and economic stability.

The event saw the collaboration of key partner agencies, including the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAGRO), the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO). These agencies are united in their commitment to ensuring the project’s comprehensive implementation aligns with established standards and best practices.

Jo Ann V. Labio, the Risk Resiliency Program-Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (RRP-CCAM) focal person for Davao Occidental, and Angelica M. Coda, Project Development Officer II, led the DSWD team in this groundbreaking endeavor.

The event included laying the groundwork for a new small farm reservoir and a thorough evaluation of ongoing projects. These efforts ensure that the projects adhere to sustainable development and climate resilience goals, ultimately fostering a more resilient and self-sufficient community. DSWD XI/RSD)
