The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office XI launched the Cash-for-Work and Training program under Project LAWA (Local Adaptation to Water Access) at BINHI (Breaking Insufficiency Through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished) in Talaingod, Davao del Norte which will benefit 50 partner-beneficiaries from the Ata Manobo tribe in Sitio Banoog, Barangay Palma Gil.

Disaster Risk Resiliency Program focal persons from the Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD), Luigi C. Garzon, and John Vergil L. Salido, presented administrative requirements and safety protocols during the orientation. They also discussed the DSWD mandate, programs, and services, including key Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) initiatives and climate change to emphasize the Department’s fight towards achieving resilient and disaster-ready communities.

Dr. Ian Paul Petines, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) of the Municipality of Talaingod, Davao del Norte led the discussions on understanding climate change, its impacts, and relevant laws and frameworks. The afternoon session included a site visit with Project LAWA at BINHI beneficiaries.

Partner agencies provided support through technical assistance and guidance, focusing on sustainability strategies for Project LAWA at BINHI in the community. Alessandro S. Celeste, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) Officer, discussed disaster awareness. Marklin Delos Santos, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Officer, provided insights into fisheries, while Rachie Marie L. Ramos, Municipal Agricultural Office (MAGRO) officer, shared agricultural best practices.

The session concluded with on-site validation by BFAR and MAGRO, emphasizing the project’s efforts to deliver sustainable training and work opportunities, thereby empowering the local Indigenous People (IP) community. (DSWD XI / RSD)
