In celebration of the 73rd Anniversary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office XI, a mangrove-planting and coastal clean-up drive dubbed as Pakig-ambit sa Kinaiyahan was conducted today led by its Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD) at Sitio Malamboon, Bucana, Brgy. 76-A, Davao City.

The activity started with an orientation facilitated by Welchie C. Evales,  Forester I, from the Office of the Community and Natural Resources, Davao City.

The orientation provided them valuable insights into the importance of mangroves in coastal ecosystems and their role in mitigating climate change effects. “Mangroves support biodiversity and fisheries, reduce coastal erosion, climate regulation, natural filtration of air, and economic benefits for our fisher folks,” Evales said.

The staff from the DSWD XI were also educated on the techniques of planting mangrove seedlings to ensure their survival and growth.

The City of Environment and Natural Resources Davao City generously provided 90 mangrove seedlings for the event, further emphasizing the collaborative efforts of various government establishments in environmental conservation.

After the orientation, participants started planting the mangrove seedlings and the coastal clean-up drive. The event contributed significantly to the restoration and preservation of the coastal environment while fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among the participants.

The successful execution of the activity underscores the Department’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development as one of its focus this year for its 73rd-anniversary celebration. (DSWD XI/RSD)
