Davao Region has 81 centenarians

DAVAO City (DSWD XI) – “At least 81 Filipinos in the region have reached 100 years old and are entitled to benefit from the newly approved Republic Act 10868 or the Centenarians’ Act of 2016,” announced Assistant Director Ma. Vilia L. Vigil of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) during the culmination program on the celebration of Elderly Filipino Week on Monday.

DSWD will visit each of the centenarians and award them a Certificate of Recognition for their longevity and endurance, Director Vigil said.

DSWD records show that as of September this year, Eboc Mabayang Ongan of Barangay Dalag Lumot, Marilog District is the oldest in the region at 130 years. Trailing him are three 114 years of age all from Davao City –Vicenta Navarro of Talomo, Rosario Suriaga of Toril, and Rosa Verano of Calinan.

Further, of the 81 centenarians, 1 is 112 years old, 4 are 111, and 2 are 110 years.

Under RA 10868, all Filipinos who reach the age of 100 will receive a P100,000.00 cash incentive and a letter of felicitation from the President of the Philippines, whether they are residing in the Philippines or abroad.

They will also be awarded with a plaque of recognition and additional cash gift from their respective city or municipal government during the National Respect for Centenarians’ Day set on September 25 every year.

Filipino older persons are also honored with the annual observance of Elderly Filipino Week every first week of October. To help instill love and respect for senior citizens among the younger generation, this year’s celebration theme is Pagmamahal at Respeto ng Nakababata, Nagpapaligaya sa Nakatatanda. (DSWD)

Seniors’ Week

SENIORS’ WEEK. To date, DSWD Davao Region has listed 82,531 older persons who qualify in the Social Pension Program for Indigent Senior Citizens and 81 centenarians who are entitled to benefit from the newly approved Republic Act 10868 or the Centenarians’ Act of 2016 which grants a P100,000.00 cash incentive and additional benefits and privileges to all Filipinos who reach 100 years of age. DSWD awards Huwarang Pamilya 2016 winners

Davao City (DSWD XI) – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) awards the regional and provincial winners of the 2016 Regional Search for Huwarang Pamilyang Pilipino at Grand Men Seng Hotel, Davao City on Thursday, October 6.

“The search aims to recognize family beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program who maintain strong family ties, demonstrate positive Filipino values, and have a positive impact in the community where they reside,” said DSWD Regional Director Mercedita P. Jabagat.

Some 29 families from all-over Davao Region will gather during the awarding ceremony.

Highlighting the event will be the awarding of the regional and provincial winners -the Hinampas Family of Asuncion, Davao del Norte; Jabanes Family of Kiblawan, Davao del Sur; Bagolaque Family of New Bataan, Compostela Valley; Diansing Family of Malita, Davao Occidental; Pleños Family of San Isidro, Davao Oriental; and Sarino Family of Tigatto, Davao City.

Launched in 2012, the search is open to all Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries who have good standing in the community with no derogatory records and have not been convicted of any administrative, criminal, civil case or cases involving moral turpitude in the last five years, and a family with 100% compliance in all Pantawid Pamilya conditionalities.

The Regional Winner will receive P 20,000.00 and a plaque while all Provincial Winners will receive P 10,000.00 each plus plaque. (DSWD)

DSWD Davao celebrates Elderly Week

Davao City (DSWD XI) -The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) XI with the Department of Health (DOH) SM Cares, PhilHealth, and the City Government of Davao led the celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week 2016.

From October 1-7, the celebration this year bears the theme Pagmamahal at Respeto ng Nakababata, Nagpapaligaya sa Nakatatanda.

“Over the weekend, the annual observance kicked off with a Simultaneous Walk and Zumba  spearheaded by DOH followed by the different presentations of senior citizen like cultural dance, vocal solo and modern dance,”  said Angelic P. Blasquez, focal on older persons of DSWD.

DOH provided health services like blood pressure taking, random blood screening, medical consultation, mini mental state exam, rehabilitation consultation, bone density scan with interpretation and osteoporosis screening, hypertension screening, and provision of supplements, Blasquez said.

Also, PhilHealth conducted membership registration and updating and accepted as well member data amendment requests, she said.

“For DSWD, we will pay social pension and provide older persons free massage, pedicure, manicure and haircut at the Regional Office, and for the culmination activity on October 10, senior citizens will showcase their talents and we will recognize DSWD employees who are gracefully ageing,” Blasquez added.

Centenarians

The first Sunday of October is also declared as National Respect for Centenarians Day. To date, DSWD has listed 81 names of centenarians in Region XI.

On September 26, President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) 10868 or the Centenarians’ Act of 2016.

The law states that all Filipinos, who have reached  100 years old and above, whether residing in the Philippines or abroad shall be honored with a Letter of Felicitation from the President of the Philippines congratulating the centenarian for his or her longevity; and a Centenarian Gift in the amount of one hundred thousand pesos (Php100,000.00).

Moreover, DSWD continues to implement the Social Pension Program for Indigent Senior Citizens, entitling them a Php 500 monthly stipend to augment their daily needs. The qualifying age was lowered this year to 65 years old. For 2016, DSWD XI has registered 82,531 indigent elders.

Meanwhile, the government ensures strict implementation of Republic Act (RA) 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010, which provides more benefits and privileges to older persons like 20% discount on the purchase of certain goods and services, special 5% discount on prime commodities and basic necessities, and 5% utility discount on electric and water consumption.
