The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office XI through the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) program inaugurated a PHP1.2M drainage canal at Purok Mahogany, Brgy. Matiao, Pantukan, Davao del Oro on August 13, 2024, graced by community volunteers, local officials, and various project stakeholders.

Work on the canal began on April 19, 2024, and was completed in just over two months, with the final touches finished on June 20, 2024. The total project cost amounted to PHP1,257,319.00, with a substantial counterpart contribution of PHP422,642.86 from the community, highlighting the collective commitment to improving local infrastructure.

The event commenced with a traditional blessing, during which prayers were offered for the canal’s continued success and efficient operation. This was followed by a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially handing over the completed project to the community.

Dennis B. Manjac, the Operation and Maintenance Chairperson, expressed his relief and optimism.

“The new canal will make a huge difference during the rainy season. We appreciate all of the effort put into this initiative and look forward to seeing its results,” Manjac said.

The project is a vital addition to the infrastructure of Purok Mahogany, Barangay Matiao. With the canal now operational, the community looks ahead with hope, anticipating a future with significantly reduced flooding risks. The completion of this project not only represents a victory for the residents but also stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the importance of infrastructure development in enhancing quality of life.
