The Davao Light and Power Corporation Inc. (DLPC), Aboitiz Foundation Inc., and National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Region XI have officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to provide solar home kits to identified Indigenous Peoples (IP) families under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). This initiative targets families with children enrolled in Pegalongan Elementary School in Marilog District, Davao City.
The ceremonial MOA signing last July 9, 2024, was attended by NCIP Regional Director Atty. Geroncio R. Aguio, Aboitiz Foundation President Ana Margarita Hontiveros-Malvar, the late DLPC Chief Operating Officer Rodger S. Velasco, 4Ps RPMO Division Chief Margie G. Cabido, and Pegalongan Elementary School Principal Rojay O. Pendio.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region XI, through the 4Ps program, is set to receive solar home kits valued at P150,000. These kits are designed to provide students with a conducive study environment by ensuring well-lit homes, thereby enhancing their educational opportunities. This initiative is especially focused on supporting IP families in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA), particularly those with children monitored under the 4Ps program.
Through the provision of solar home kits, the project aims to address the critical challenge of limited access to electricity in remote areas, thereby improving the quality of life for these families. Reliable lighting will enable students to extend their study hours beyond daylight, fostering better academic performance and overall well-being. This initiative will motivate students to attend school regularly, complete assignments, and not miss classes, leading to better attendance rates among 4Ps beneficiaries. Consequently, 4Ps households will be more compliant with the program’s requirements, ensuring their continued participation.
This project underscores the commitment of DLPC, Aboitiz Foundation, and NCIP to empower Indigenous communities and promote sustainable development. The provision of solar home kits to IP families in Marilog District exemplifies the collective effort to bridge gaps in basic services and promote inclusive growth. The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program is the government’s primary social protection strategy to break intergenerational poverty by supporting poor households and investing in children’s health and education.
